Tomorrow evening council will review City Ordinance 08-01, which since 2008 has required all Marfa property owners to pay minimum water, sewer, and garbage fees regardless of actual use. I’ve spoken to quite a few local residents who’ve inherited property or had to leave for medical reasons and are still typically paying $66 per month despite disconnecting services. The ordinance is especially a hardship for elderly folks and others on a fixed income.
Council will look at the options that the City Attorney has put together and hopefully make changes to the ordinance tomorrow night. If you are a Marfa resident who would like to speak to Council about this ordinance, please attend the meeting tomorrow evening, Tuesday, 6pm in the Casner Room at City Hall.
I’ve also asked City staff to provide information to Council on Ordinance 16-02, which creates a regressive sewer surcharge and which I think should be modified to place more burden on the heaviest commercial users.
This will be the beginning of City Council’s review and hopeful revision to a number of outdated ordinances this spring.
