There was a period of time a few years ago where I did the Sunday Times crossword with a passion that was nearer to religion than habit and I haven't had a go at it in a long time but seeing your quest to find a reliable source for it makes me want to revisit it myself. I had this artist friend who lived on 80 acres in rural Missouri and she needed help with keeping the wood stove going through one winter when she wasn't able to and I lived in her studio and chopped wood and fed the furnace. I'd make the long walk up the snow-covered driveway to get the paper and then sled back down to make a photocopy of the crossword puzzle so we'd both have a copy then we'd break to our separate spaces to race and see who solved the Wednesday puzzle the fastest. In our boredom we'd even give the Monday puzzles a go just because. But for the Sunday puzzle it usually required a halftime status conference mid-puzzle to slyly compare notes without ever giving too much away if one of us didn't yet have the answer to a certain section or clue. It was a great time for me and we had a great time for sure and if you ever want someone to do the Sunday Times crossword with you I'm in. Although I might have to start out with the Monday or Tuesday puzzles to get back into the swing of things.

the times offers a crossword subscription for $40 a year. that gives you access to their puzzle archives and all the acrostics and ken-kens and sudokus as well. the crossword subscription is not included in the times' electronic newspaper subscription, however.
