I've spoken to a bunch of pals lately who didn't know McDonald Observatory programs are free for locals so, here's a quick PSA:
McDonald Observatory has two daytime tours each day of the week which include observations of the sun and tours of the research telescopes. These leave at 11 AM and 2 PM. Self guided viewings are available 10-5 each day and the Hobby-Eberly (3rd largest telescope in the world!) has a redesigned public gallery with new exhibitions to check out. Star Parties are Tues, Fri, Sat and begin at sun down.
All of this is free to residents of Presidio, Brewster, and Jeff Davis counties if you call ahead and reserve a spot.
